Polandia: Prospective Member of Parliament Sensual Campaign Through the Internet

They say that sex sells, so there is no surprise that with an upcoming election, there would be a candidate or two willing to court controversy in order to gain attention for some votes. Katarzyna Lenart, a 23 year old political science student looking to be elected in Lublin, has raised some eyebrows this week thanks to her Youtube video, in which she partially strips off on camera. The video is only 40 seconds long , but had gathered 122,000 views on Youtube by last Thursday (October 6th) and since then has jumped to over 410,000 views today (Saturday October 8th).

To summarise the clip for those who may be uncomfortable with such viewing: the scene opens with Katarzyna Lenart sitting in a dark suit, white shirt and black tie combination while seated in a swivel chair. The phrase SLD Electoral Committee (Komitet Wyborczy SLD) appears in the bottom left of the screen. Next, she evokes the spirit of Sharon Stone by uncrossing her legs provocatively (but without the ‘extras’ on show in Basic Instinct). She drags off her tie and launches it towards the camera, and then begins caressing her hair seductively. Then, swinging the chair around, she stands up with her back to the viewers, pushing the chir backwards, and her mini-striptease begins. The jacket drops first to leave her glancing over her shoulder. Then she unbuttons her shirt and it too falls to reveal her pink bra underneath. (Some colour experts might even call it shocking pink). But the video does not finish there… She then unhooks her bra – at which point a big ‘Censored’ sign lands on screen to protect her ‘modesty’ – and she walks towards the screen. The scene darkens and finishes with a caption saying “Do you want more? Vote SLD! Together we can do more” – “Chcesz więcej? Głosuj na SLD. Tylko my możemy zrobić więcej” po polsku.
However, the reaction has been mixed at best. She has needed to defend the stunt saying in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza. “I thought it was time to cause a stir,” she said. “My campaign targets young people, and young people are only interested in controversial stuff, unfortunately,” according to the newspaper. “I don’t think it was vulgar or obscene. You can hardly see anything,” she added, not that it had taken guts to strip. However, if those externally are criticizing her it could be shrugged off, but further complaint came from within the SLD, with Tomasz Kalita, a spokesperson for the party, saying that it did not give the right image. It also makes you wonder if she gets elected – what happens next? And would this become a party policy. You would hope not, given as the majority of representatives would be middle aged men, and with them less skin on show would be plenty. Thus, they say that there is no such thing as bad publicity, but in this case it is hard to see how this shows Ms. Lenart in a positive way (apart from among the 18-30 male voting group).
It seems to show some naivety with regards to understanding the political system. In general, this Youtube video will be seen by those Internet-savvy individuals, generally aged below 40. However, ironically that will be the age group that tends to have least interest in politics and voting. Had Ms. Lenart more sense and focus on being elected, she would probably have spent more time shaking hands of babcias and dziadeks in Lublin and listening to their stories in order to gain votes. When they look at the electoral list, they will just see another name. If her photo would be seen by those around retirement age, they may think “Oh, she looks a bit like my grandaughter”, but it’s doubtful that would get her elected. Thus it would seem she would need to spend more time in her political studies class and appearing less on Youtube should she maintain hopes for a political career.

Global Economic Prospects—June 2011

Washington, June 7, 2011—As they put the financial crisis behind them, developing countries need to focus on tackling country-specific challenges such as achieving balanced growth through structural reforms, coping with inflationary pressures, and dealing with high commodity prices, the World Bank says in its June 2011 edition of Global Economic Prospects.
In contrast, prospects for high-income countries and many of Europe's developing countries remain clouded by crisis-related problems such as high unemployment, household and banking-sector budget consolidation, and concerns over fiscal sustainability among other factors.
The World Bank projects that as developing countries reach full capacity, growth will slow from 7.3 percent in 2010 to around 6.3 percent each year from 2011-2013. High-income countries will see growth slow from 2.7 percent in 2010 to 2.2 percent in 2011 before picking up to 2.7 percent and 2.6 percent in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
"Globally, GDP Measured at 2005 market prices and exchange rates (or 4.8 percent in 2010, 4.3 percent in 2011, 4.4 percent in 2012, and 4.5 percent in 2013 when aggregated using Purchasing Power Parity weights). is expected to grow 3.2 percent in 2011 before edging up to 3.6 percent in 2012," said Justin Yifu Lin, the World Bank's Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics. "But further increases in already high oil and food prices could significantly curb economic growth and hurt the poor."

1000 days to go until Brazil 2014

Friday 16 September 2011
With just 1000 days remaining before the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ gets underway, the planet’s biggest football fiesta is entering its project-completion phase. And once this countdown is complete, the 32 participating nations will begin their epic struggle for the right to be crowned world champions for the next four years.
Brazil is already starting to look like a country that is ready to host a FIFA World Cup. Stadiums that are either modernised or brand-new are set to play host to Planet Football’s most spectacular performers spanning the 12 Host Cities. The list is as follows, with the stadium names in brackets: Belo Horizonte (Mineirao), Brasilia (Estadio Nacional), Cuiaba (Arena Pantanal), Curitiba (Arena da Baixada), Fortaleza (Castelao), Manaus (Arena da Amazonia), Natal (Arena das Dunas), Porto Alegre (Beira-Rio), Recife (Arena Pernambuco), Rio de Janeiro (Maracana), Salvador de Bahia (Arena Fonte Nova) and Sao Paulo (Arena de Sao Paulo).

However, plenty more has also been achieved since Brazil were awarded the right to host the competition back on 30 October 2007. Already 1417 days have passed since the FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announced that Brazil would host the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the next FIFA World Cup, which was founded on 2 January 2009, has been working hard for some time to ensure everything is in place come 2014. Nearly 70 people are currently working together on the competition’s organisation, and that is without counting consultants from Arena (providers of technical support on pitches and stadiums), law firm Barbosa Mussnich & Aragao, as well as the auditors from Ernst & Young, who keep up a real-time supervision of the LOC's accounts.
Work on the stadiums continues to progress apace and even those venues that were experiencing difficulties at the start of this year, such as the Arena das Dunas and the Arena de Sao Paulo, are getting back on track in terms of the time-frame established alongside the LOC.
What is more, there have been a number of studies carried out on the match calendar for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which will be announced in October 2011. Along similar lines, other important pieces of information have also come to light, such as the location of the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), which will be situated in the Riocentre convention centre in Rio de Janeiro.

The selection process for the Official Training Pitches (COTs) is in its final phase, with more news on this expected in a matter of days. Across the country, a number of locations that could host National Team Training Centres (CTSs) are also undergoing thorough inspections, with an initial list of approved facilities to be unveiled this year. Additional signing-up periods for new facilities wishing to throw their names into the hat will be held in 2012.
Further accomplishments have been the number of seminars and studies that have been carried out in a variety of fields, such as transport and transit, playing surfaces, marketing, fan fests, security and volunteering.
In July 2011 Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro hosted arguably the first major event of the 2014 FIFA World Cup – the Preliminary Draw – which set out the qualifying trail for teams across Planet Football. The event was broadcast in nearly 200 countries and offered a small taste of the joy, fun and colour that we can expect at the 2014 global showpiece on Brazilian soil.

Aussies building for further success

Thursday 13 October 2011
Despite maintaining a perfect record after three 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifiers, Australia have set their sights on further improvement over the course of the campaign.

Australia saw off Oman 3-0 on Tuesday in Sydney with a confident performance which belied three previous matches against the same opponent over the past four years, resulting in two single-goal wins for the Socceroos and a draw.

The match was also marked by a line-up that has changed significantly since the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Missing were long-serving players such as Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer, Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton, who were absent for a variety of reasons.

The regeneration of the Australian team under Holger Osieck has been highly successful to date, with the Socceroos suffering just one loss in their last 15 outings.

Victory in Oman next month will see Australia book progression to the fourth and final stage of Asian qualifying with two matches to spare.

“We want to go through the qualification phase with maximum points and keep building on our performances,” midfielder Mile Jedinak told FIFA.com.

“We want the best out of each other and we push each other to the maximum. I think that will continue and with that will come more assured and better football.

An early goal from Brett Holman settled nerves for the home side on Tuesday, with second-half strikes from Josh Kennedy and Jedinak completing the scoring.

It was the nature of the performance, as much as the result, which left Osieck in a satisfied mood post-match. “The boys know the direction and we still have to gain a couple of points to ensure we qualify for the next round," said Osieck.

"We are in a good way, we are a good passing team and that's what I like to see and if we carry on that way we will still raise our level of play and that is my target. I think what we did well was that even under pressure we tried to play out.

"There was always kind of triangle play, there was always opportunity to play the ball up and the guy who received the ball had the game in front of them so we could pass from there. The passing was pretty accurate, pretty crisp and that's what I want to see."

In-form attack
The team’s recent success has coincided with the prolific form in front of goal for the Japan-based Kennedy. A close-range finish against Oman means the beanpole striker has now bagged eight goals in his last five international matches. Kennedy, currently top goalscorer in the J.League, is enjoying a fruitful combination alongside Holman with the AZ Alkmaar attacker providing an assist for his colleague in each of the last two matches.

Kennedy concurs with Osieck’s view that the team’s passing style of the team is a key reason behind the team’s development. "The way we play in Japan (at Nagoya Grampus Eight), knocking the ball around, and the way Holger wants to play, with support up front and playing football and keeping possession, it all adds up," said Kennedy. "It makes a huge difference all around the park, not just up front.

"We're in a great position, so hopefully we finish it off in November," said the in-form attacker. "That's definitely the goal. We're scoring plenty of goals, so there's no reason we can't.”

Stoner dominates Down Under

Friday, 14 October 2011

Casey Stoner kept the rest of the field at bay once again on Friday at Phillip Island, leading the times from start to finish to close the first day of practice nearly three tenths of a second clear of Jorge Lorenzo, with Marco Simoncelli third.

The first day of the Iveco Grand Prix of Australia saw Casey Stoner lead both the morning and afternoon sessions to put his #27 Repsol Honda three tenths clear of Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) in the combined times. Stoner’s morning time of 1’30.475, just under a tenth faster than his FP2 pace, stood as the fastest lap of the day as the Australian joined the other one third of the field who did not improve upon their earlier times.

Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) stepped up his pace by four hundredths to slot himself ahead of Lorenzo in the afternoon despite a repeat of the morning’s misfortune of an early crash. The Italian was followed by Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) with a time of 1’31.495, an improvement of four tenths, though it wasn’t enough to knock Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) out of fourth, leaving Spies to rank fifth behind his compatriot in the combined times.
Sixth for the day was Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) thanks to his time he set in the morning, while team mate Dani Pedrosa ranked seventh with a lap of 1’31.543 set in the afternoon. Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) ranked eighth for the day, with Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) following the Japanese rider by 0.080s with his time set in the morning to rank ninth.
Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing) took the tenth spot ahead of Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki), while Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) lingered in 13th, a second and a half behind leading man Stoner.
Home rider Damien Cudlin, who is replacing an injured Héctor Barberá for the Mapfre Aspar team, paced one second behind Toni Elías on the LCR Honda in 16th.

Friday Flicks: Is 'Footloose' One of the Best Remakes Ever?

No matter how honorable its intentions, when is a remake considered too soon? Colin Farrell, for instance, is to star in a new version of Total Recall, which was only released in the 1990s. In fact, that film is so fresh that its catchphrases still roll off the tongue ("consider that a divorce!"). But Footloose only came out itself in 1984, which isn't exactly a time when talkies were a novelty. One thing's for sure: if it's to be deemed a success, it had better be good to placate the passionate Footloose fanbase.

If you're not familiar with the plot, it tells the story of Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald), the big-city high school rebel with a cause (more on that later), who has left Boston for the far smaller Southern town of Bomont. All he wants to do is dance (preferably to loud music), but he's confronted with a dancing ban which, is like, so unfair. Can Ren win over the locals? Will he get it on with his kindred spirit, Ariel (Julianne Hough), the town preacher's (Dennis Quaid) trouble-making daughter? And will Ren make you yearn for Kevin Bacon?

We won't give away the first two questions but can reassure you that he – yes! – brings home the bacon. Those sure are some footsteps to literally follow in, and Wormald would not have been your first (or possibly fifteenth) choice were you casting the film. But he clearly knows how to move, as befits a former backup dancer for Justin Timberlake. And while Timberlake himself might have been a flashier fit for Footloose, director Craig Brewer (known for Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, which actually starred Timberlake) is still able to let loose. Who'd have thunk that the man who burst onto the scene with the gritty (and really rather excellent) Hustle & Flow would have wanted anything to do with this project? But with everybody involved seemingly having such a good time, it's like the weight of the original isn't even a factor. "I know you've got to do what you've got to do," says Ren, "but that ain't gonna stop it from happening." It's as if he's addressing skeptical audience members. In the fullness of time, this version of Footloose might just become the definitive one.
